The Messerschmitt Bf 109 E fighter plane became one of the symbols of the German Blitzkrieg during the first two years of World War II. The modern, cantilever low wing aircraft dominated the skies over Europe, finding a worthy opponent only in the fight over the British Isles against the perfect Supermarine Spitfires. At the controls of the Bf 109 E, the most famous Luftwaffe fighter pilots, such as Hans-Joachim Marseille, Werner Mölders and Adolf Galland, gained their first combat experience. The Allies had to fight this plane not only under the skies of Europe, but also over North Africa. After the withdrawal from the fighter units in the second half of 1941, the Bf 109 E served for another year in assault units as a bombing fighter. It was appreciated by pilots for its strong armament and significant vertical and horizontal speed, but at the same time criticized for its insufficient flight range. The Messerschmitt Bf 109 E, although it was not the most widely produced variant of the famous fighter, became its most popular version due to its participation in the Battle of Britain.
