Vought F4U Corsair vol. II
Leszek A. Wieliczko
Tomasz Szlagor
The second volume of this monograph continues the history of combat use and the development of the Corsair. In 1944 the Corsair was a combat-proven plane. Approved for service on aircraft carriers, it soon became a serious competitor to the Hellcat as the main US Navy fighter. The F4U-1D version entered production, capable of carrying almost a ton of bombs and eight missiles, performing well both in air combat and in attacks against ground targets. Nevertheless, Vought and Goodyear designers continued their efforts to constantly improve the aircraft. Thanks to new, more powerful engines, two new versions of the Corsair - the F4U-4 and F2G-1/2 - were created before the end of World War II. The history of their creation is described in the first chapter. The next two chapters briefly present the service, painting and marking of Corsair in British and New Zealand aviation. The last chapter was devoted to the activities of the US Marine Corps and US Navy Corsair units from February 1944 to March 1945. The operations in the Marshall Islands, the Marianas, the Palau Islands, the Philippines and the first Corsair operations carried out from aircraft carriers have been extensively covered based on reports and combat logs. The book is supplemented by numerous tables and lists, color charts with the silhouettes of five selected planes and plans (technical drawings) of various versions in 1/48 scale.
